During the month of July I will be completing my Practicum in the Career Center at the The University of Alabama. I chose this area because of my interest in guiding students towards finding their career. Students come to college to expand their knowledge and hopefully it will result in that student finding a job. However, many students do not truly put as much thought into their major as they should and end up not being happy with the career they have chosen. I am passionate about helping students find what THEY are passionate about and helping them pave their way to meet their dreams. The only way I will truly know if this is a department I can see myself working is to get the experience now. Is this a job I can see myself doing? What are all the job requirements? Do my strengths align with the job I would be expected to do? I am hoping all of these questions will be answered for me during my time at UA.
I am also looking forward to networking and meeting people on another campus. I attended Mississippi State University for my undergraduate degree and currently now for my graduate degree. I think it will be good for me to experience a new school. By being in a new place it will open my eyes to imagining if I could possibly see myself working at that particular institution. I also believe networking is essential for professionals at every level and am looking forward to meeting new people while I am there.
I have already began constructing my goals and objectives with my supervisor, and I am excited about the new opportunities I will be involved with. Be sure to check my posts in the coming weeks for more details about what I will be doing at the Career Center at The University of Alabama!
