Reflection
This week was an eventful week at Jackson State
University! I started off with judicial services and was able to go through
past and current cases. Since I previously attended a dissertation defense on
student conduct and sanctions, it was great to be able to compare the research done
in that study to how professionals actually work. There has been turnover in
judicial services at JSU within the past year so I was able to see how more
than one person handled cases and if their sanctions seemed alike or completely
different. It made me really think about conduct and how we use it to better
our students. Going into my own judicial cases at State this next year within
Housing I know that I will definitely use what I learned to help me.
One of the programs I was really interested in working
with is the Summer Developmental Program because it is the student population I
am most interested working with. Students that do not have the requirements to
get into college and must take certain classes during the summer and pass to be
admitted fully are the students in this program. When I went to the program
they had a speaker there who had actually attended JSU and was heavily involved.
She talked to them about how she made it through college, started her own
business, and used both her ups and downs to help her succeed. I thought it was
amazing! It was easy to see the student were extremely interested and she made
sure to keep them a part of the talk by asking them questions about their
future. Their program goes on to graduate many students and it definitely made
me think about a future of my own working with a summer development program.
Since I was a former athlete in college I hold a
particular interest when it comes to working with student-athletes. I had the opportunity
to work with compliance to create skits for the students about the many rules
they have when becoming an athlete in college. It was crazy to see many of
these rules that I did not even know of when I played. JSU is doing an amazing
job by making the rules, which are tedious and sometimes confusing, displayed
in a entertaining way that will allow the students to better understand.
I am so thankful for my supervisor for being absolutely
amazing! Throughout this whole process he has been involved and very
resourceful. I am definitely looking forward to this next week and what
experiences it holds!!
