Experience

I will be doing my practicum with the office of Student Support Services at Mississippi State University this summer. I am anxious and excited to be getting this new experience in the student affairs field. I definitely jumped right in from the first moment. I will be working directly under the Associate Director, Micah White. After meeting the staff in the Student Support Services office, they brought me up to speed on the various projects for the summer.

I will assist Student Support Services in transition of the ACCESS program into a larger classroom in Montgomery Hall, where the program is housed. I will also be helping out with academic advising throughout the freshmen summer orientations. On Friday I get to do my first academic advising for undeclared majors. It was a great experience, since I have not gotten to do that here at Mississippi State. I was not nearly as nervous as I thought I was going to be when I got in there, and I knew a lot more about academic advising than I initially perceived. I was thrilled to see the familiar faces of Whitney and Chelsey there as well. It was comforting to know that I had classmates in the same new circumstances as myself. The experience I get during this practicum will surely help to shape my competency in my career.

I feel as though I have made a great decision on where to fulfill my practicum experience. I know that I will get a diverse array of experiences here. Through the experiences I get during this practicum, I will surely help to shape my competency in my career.
