Experience:
So far, during my first week working in the Dean of Students office, I have really enjoyed it. I was taken on a tour of the office and introduced to everyone who works for the office. I got a good sense of what was expected of me, and then I hit the ground running.
I get to sit at the front desk of their office so I am the first person people see when they come into the office with questions. This has been really cool because I feel like I am able to help people out, but it has also been kind of stressful knowing that it is my first week and I do not have all of the answers. I am still trying to learn the ins and outs of the department, so having to learn on the fly has really helped me with that.
I have also gotten some cool tasks and projects that I have been able to work on over the course of the past week or so. They have put me in charge of creating a power point for them to use during RA and RD training, and I have really enjoyed that because that is something that I am familiar with. I have also gotten to work closely with parent support services in helping them create their summer news letter.
So far, the week has been filled with a lot of learning. I am doing most of my work behind the desk right now, so I am excited to get some hands on experience in the future. I have talked with my supervisor about what I would like to get out of my experience, and he said that everything was within reason, so I am looking forward to seeing what happens next week.
