Experience
During academic advising I worked with a student who was caught in “no man’s land” in regards to taking a math class. I was explaining that the student could take the class at a community college and transfer the credit, but she did not understand how community colleges worked. Because of my past experience of being a transfer student I could explain this concept with confidence. In class and in our reading, I have read that everyone has transferrable skills and past experiences that are helpful in student affairs. This concept was validated while working with this student.
At one point, when I was working with a student, I hit a wall. She did not want to take any of the classes available either because she thought the class was too easy or it was not offered at a good time. I asked one of the academic advisors to help me out. He was able to offer another perspective on the classes and be more assertive, and she quickly finished making her schedule. At first I was frustrated because I could not help her on my own. After thinking about it more I came up with a couple of thoughts. The first is that I am new at advising and, I do not know how to solve all problems. The second is that after someone is working on something for a long period, sometimes a new perspective is needed. Later on, my supervisor validated these thoughts. Now, I am ready for week three.
Chelsey,
ReplyDeleteI think it is great that you are able to use your past experience to help current and future students. As a student, I feel as though it is so easy to get caught up in the confusion of situations that we do not take the time out to realize that we have so many different resources all around us. I think it is really great that you were able to use your transferable skills and apply it to your current situation.
I also think that it is very encouraging of you to be able to share your mistakes and your worries with us as a class. I think it is great that you recognized your frustrations, but you did not dwell on them. You used them as stepping stones to see how you could make changes for the future. One thing that may be cool to think about is even though you are new in academic advising, have you been able to find times when it is more appropriate to be assertive? I know that is something that I am currently struggling with.
