Amber Norwood: Orientation and Events - Week 2

Activities:

  • Met with supervisor
  • Continued assisting with the implementation of orientation
  • Worked with OLs "behind the scenes"
  • Discussed OL selection process with Director, Lindsey Storey
Experience:

Last week was great! It was incredibly busy, but I'm noticing that as a theme with Orientation :) My largest duty last week was of course assisting with Orientation. I have gotten to assist with several areas so far and I'm learning that even the smallest task is important for making the event flow smoothly. I think my favorite moment last week came from when I was directing families toward the Union for check-in after they parked their cars...A mom walked her son to the Union and the came back asking for directions to MAFES so she could get icecream!
I also continued to work with the OL's "behind the scenes" to prepare for the following orientations. They are a blast to work with but it's so interesting to see all of the behind the scenes work that goes into making orientation flow. From creating nametags to pulling t-shirts to moving golf carts to flipping the ballroom, we have done it all. I think that getting to see how Orientation and Events collaborates with other departments such as Financial Aid, Facilities, and Housing is very beneficial for me, especially since that is something that I am just starting to do with my new GA position.
Finally, I met with Kylie multiple times over the course of the week to discuss how things were going and how I can improve. I always enjoy meeting with Kylie because she is so willing to explain things to me in detail and makes sure I am getting a well-rounded view of how the office works. Because the office is so small, I have alot of contact with the other staff members as well. This past week I got the opportunity to informally discuss the OL selection process with the Director, Lindsey Storey. She gave me alot of insight into how the application and interview process works. We also had a good discussion about fit and how the dynamics of the potential group makes up a large part of the decision.
Overall, I am still loving my practicum spot. I don't think I could have chosen a better location for the summer and I am learning more everyday!

  1. I'm glad you got to help with the Orientation Leaders and see what their position is like! I had the chance to live in Moseley last summer where they lived and never knew how much work they put into their position to help make orientation amazing. I know I had a true appreciation for them after witnessing it! -- Alexandra
