Experience

My practicum experience with Shackouls Honors College has been quite exciting so far. I feel that I hit the ground running on the first day and have been assigned quality tasks that will help me to learn quite a bit about various functional areas of Student Affairs. On my first day, I was introduced to the team in the office and we discussed goals and objectives of what everyone would like to get out of this experience. My work with the Honors College will include experience in representing the college at New Student Orientation in sessions geared toward both students and parents, planning and implementing programs for the upcoming year alongside a student worker, creating the schedule of events for Honors College Convocation, as well as experience working with staff in the areas of recruiting and advising.

I am very excited about all of the opportunities working with the Honors College will provide me. In this first week I have been able to learn all about their history, mission, and values through promotional materials and interactive experiences. The first major task I was assigned and completed was creating a media presentation that will showcase the living, learning, research, study abroad, and service aspects of the Honors College. This media presentation is currently playing on a loop in the lobby of Griffis Hall.

The staff of the Honors College has been very welcoming to me and supportive of this practicum experience. I was a bit nervous at first because no one has ever completed their practicum with the Honors College, and it always challenging to be the first to blaze the trail. However, I feel that there is a unique opportunity created to learn about bridging the academic and student affairs sides of an institution in working with the Honors College. This bridge is something I am incredibly interested in and my practicum experience this summer will prove invaluable. I am beyond excited to continue this experience with the Shackouls Honors College!

  1. Kelsey,

This post was particularly interesting to me since you are the first student to do a practicum at the Honors College. One thing I learned from your post is that the Honors College here at Mississippi State seems to do a lot more than I thought it did. I did not know that they were involved in the advising and orientation process. I also find it interesting that you get to bridge the academic and student affairs worlds. I challenge you to think about how you can make this bridge an advantage as you look into starting your career. How can you transfer the skills you are about to learn into other areas of your life?
