Experience
The second week at the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion turned out to be a success in providing me with some experiences that are aligned with my practicum contract. I have found that I am not treated as simply a graduate student but as the competent professional as I someday hope to be.
Being that my supervisor was to attend a conference later in the week, we met early in the week to discuss some things that he wanted me to work before his departure. After following through with this, I proceeded to shadow the "Research and Assessments" staff member in the office. He was really good about allowing me to observe and ask questions. Also, he really took to my being curious as to how I could take my experiences within the office and use them as tools to make me a more effective professional.
This week served as a continuum to last week with a large part of my work focusing on contacting different secondary education administrators for advertisement of the annual "Men of Color Summit" this fall. Advertisement is probably one of the biggest themes that I have been experiencing over the past two weeks within my practicum position. All in all, I would find it hard to say that I haven't already grown from being able to complete only a few hours these past two weeks of my practicum position. I am enjoying every bit of the experience and I hope to continue this pattern.

Josh,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you are enjoying your time working with the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion. From your experiences shared in class and in these blog posts it is clear that you are dedicated to bettering yourself both as a professional and a person. Your practicum experience is definitely helping you do so. I know that sometimes it can be intimidating to ask to be included on certain tasks within the office and I applaud you for taking the initiative to do so with your supervisor. From what you have shared, it seems that he is taking notice of that as well.
My question to you this week is regarding your future career in student affairs. Has your experience so far in the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion given you any relatable insight on your passion for career counseling? Or has this experience challenged you to consider working for another department in the future?
I look forward to hearing more about your experience in class!
Take care,
Raychel
