VanHorn-Week 6- University of Utah Recruitment

The past few days have been very busy but I have also learned a lot. Tuesday afternoon we once again had several different presentations from different organizations and departments from across campus. It has been really interesting to see the different services Utah offers compared to other schools in the south simply because of the culture of students they are serving.

Tuesday afternoon, the Center for Disabilities and several other departments gave presentations on their perspective areas.  One interesting thing I learned was that Utah is just now opening a Veteran Affairs Center. It has been really interesting to have to change my thought process about this institution compared not only to MSU but also other institutions in the south. There are programs such as centers for Native Americans and LGBT which we do not have at MSU and are not necessarily as in as high of a demand as they are here.

One program I found really interesting was the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). This program is somewhat like a graduate position but for undergraduates. The student pairs up with a professor and does a research project. This opportunity is available to all students no matter what their major. The students are paid for their time they spend on research. The ultimate goal is to be published at the end of the project and also build a relationship with a faculty member.

Throughout the rest of week we will continue to have presentations and also give campus tours and information sessions which I will be able to participate and help out with.

I find the same thing here that you are taking about in relation to the services that are offered to students. The Center for Americas Veterans is very important to MSU's campus and is well respected, but that isn't even offered at Dickinson. The main reason is because students here are very much the traditional student; 18-22. When you're paying $55,000 a year to come here, you are probably not going to have a family you are supporting as well. Or you haven't just come back from serving our country. The awareness for LGBTQ population and services for them are impressive and well respected here. It has led me to think about how State can be better at serving that population.

  2. JM,
It is indeed interesting to see how different schools shape their services to the population they serve. Saint Leo is obviously a small institution at its main campus, serving only 2000 students. One meeting I attended had staff members from each department under student services, and it was only about 15 people in the room. Using Maslow's theory, the student services division looks at the student body's needs and caters the services offered to those needs. Every institution does this, but it's interesting to see how each school is different.
