Reflection:
Since my last blog, I had great opportunities to experience broad faucets of student affairs entities. I was fortunate to participate in the last full day of orientation activities for transfer students and I was very excited. Our morning started at 6:30 AM and we effectively worked as a team to make sure the last session was just as good as the first. I believe a major contributor to the success of all the orientation sessions was how well we communicated and completed our assigned tasks. I learned the importance of leadership and teamwork and how completing tasks can be much more effective work individuals are goal-oriented.

My work experience in the Office of Student Recruitment has been great! Dan Coleman, the admissions counselors, and the entire staff has been extremely helpful which creates a positive learning experience for me! The most important lesson I have learned so far is that the little things count. Each Friday Dan makes sure that everyone in the office receives a candy bar of their choice. This is a small token of appreciation but it goes a long way. Though I have not been in the office long, I can tell that the staff works hard to meet the needs of others even if it means skipping lunch or grouping families for visits. I am so happy that I am enjoying my work environment and I can only aspire to one day work with individuals with such dedication and ambition to serve others.

My office task has been to communicate with MSU Roadrunners to recruit their participation in Send-off Parties hosted by the Alumni Association and the Office of Admissions and Scholarships. I learned that the parties give incoming freshmen and transfer students the opportunity to meet future classmates, gain support from alumni, and learn more about MSU. Events like these prove how dedicated MSU is to creating a welcoming environment for others and why Our State is growing and becoming more and more prosperous.
I participated in my first admissions counseling session with Shelley Pensworth and was I very impressed by the amount knowledge and enthusiasm an individual must have. Shelley did an amazing job selling MSU and answering questions the family had and allowed me to offer feedback as well. Once the counseling session was over, I went on the campus tour and the family talked about how welcoming everyone was and how they knew they made the right decision to attend MSU. I have had many experiences to interact with families on their visit but I will never forget first solo campus tour because it felt so natural to tell people they should love MSU. I had an awesome family who was eager to start the next chapter in their lives so it was truly a great experience. I was amazed at how comfortable I was as I interacted with the families and helped reassure them that they were taking the right steps of considering MSU as their new home.

Ash-
ReplyDeleteI have loved reading about your experiences in admissions this summer. As I read this blog post I could literally picture you on the second floor of Montgomery making students feel like bulldogs and assuring parents they are leaving their babies in GREAT hands.
I am SOOO proud of you for jumping right in. I know that you have been an asset in the admissions office this summer!

Ashley,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate how you are taking in the importance of the little things in our profession. The mere fact is that sometimes we cannot provide the more monetary compensation for a job well done. The candy bar is one way to illustrate this. I am glad you are recognizing that leadership comes in big and small ways!
Best,
Dr. H
