Cravens – Week 8 – MSU Housing and Residential Life

Activities:
-       RD Training
-       MVNU2MSU Preparation

Reflection:
My how time flies!  It seems like just yesterday I walking into Calvin’s office for the first time and now I only have one week of practicum left.  With time running short, I’m trying to make the most of my experience.  I consulted with my supervisor to find out what he feels are the most important areas to see with my remaining time.  One of the areas Calvin suggested was housing JAMS. Tabor Mullen presented the system to the group, and the session was my favorite so far.  I learned so much about not only the housing, but also the Dean of Students office.  I might be a nerd, but I loved the process of imputing the data and theory behind using the system.  I also appreciate how available the Dean of Students staff makes themselves, offering one on one sessions to those who had an interest.  I think I’ve going to take them up on the offer this fall; I’m very interested in learning more about the conduct system on campus.
This week also taught me some personal lessons. I need to work on being more involved in the nonbusiness side of student affairs.  Student affairs is not just a job, it is a lifestyle. Forming personal relationships outside of work is important to team building.  During the training, Calvin and the ACs arranged for several fun activities, from volleyball to lunch and bowl, and the RDs benefited greatly from participating.  I usually skipped these outings and by doing so made myself more of an observer than team member.  As I move forward, it will be important to make sure I make time for these types of activities with my future team as well as plan them for staff and students that I supervise.  It is defiantly easy to get caught up in all work and no play, and play can be an important part of creating an enjoyable work environment.

  1. Emily,

I am very much interested in the conduct system on our campus and have thought about reaching out to Tabor Mullen and seeing if I could sit in on a session. I can also identify with becoming the observer. I find it hard to become involved because I will be leaving soon, but I shouldn't let that hold me back as it is so important to build those relationships. I know you will work on finding those opportunities to play as well as work.
