Carter- Week 4: Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life MSU

This week was the last wee of Freshmen Orientations...Yay!!!  I only have one Transfer Orientation left, and it shouldn't be too big of a deal.  Overall, I have enjoyed the orientation experience, it is something I did not experience as a freshman at MSU because I was a transfer student.  So, it has been fun to see all the new faces that will grace our beautiful campus in the fall.  They are all so eager to be here and experience college life.  Many of these new faces will also become part of the Greek community here on campus, and while practicum will be officially over by the time recruitment begins, I hope I will be able to participate somehow anyway.

This week I also had the opportunity to be in a meeting with Bill Cox, Assistant Director of the University Center Complex and Luke Altendorf, Director of Memorial Student Center from Texas A&M.  It was neat to hear them talk about risk management and how it has become such an important part of their campus culture, especially since the bonfire incident.  I almost felt like I had stepped back into the classroom for this meeting, because so much that was discussed was exactly what we have been taught.  It was if they had received the transcript from Dean B or Dr. H.  However, they talked about actual experiences and how risk management or the lack thereof, has affected their campus.  They also asked us about what we do to discourage hazing in our Greek community.  Cedric and Davis told them about the Gordy video and presentations that the MSU Health Center does during recruitment.  It was nice to see the sharing of ideas among schools.

On a different note, and somewhat disappointing, Miss MSU did not win Miss Mississippi, but she did win talent.  :(  I really thought Stephanie would win.  Oh well.

Until next week...

  1. Hey Anne,
I like seeing you in passing on 3rd floor of the Colvard Student Union and our small chats by the bubbler. I thought I would drop you a line on here and say that your practicum and the experience you are getting sounds pretty cool. I have had an interest in Greek life since moving to the south and realizing how fantastic the community can be. I have read your posts every week and have been leaning bits through your experience in that office.

I hope it continues to be a really great experience for you :D

I'll see you for our next little chat in the hallway or on WIMBA!

  3. Ann-
I am loving reading about your experience! Like Kimone stated in her comment above I loved getting to chat with you in the union and enjoying staff meetings together! I can really see that although you did not know much about Greek life previously, that you have really grown though this experience.
So excited for you and really proud!!!

  4. Ann,

What a great experience for you. To hear about how administrators really use theory to change practice is eye-opening. So glad you are putting the pieces together! Sorry about Miss MS! There's always next year!
