Banks- LSU Residential Life: Welcome to MY world!

****PLEASE READ THIS SECTION AFTER THE PART AT THE BOTTOM...it will ONLY LET ME TYPE UP HERE. LOL ****     I met with Kara, who is over conduct for Residential Life. my, I did not know how much went into conduct just with students living on campus. I understand that there are policies, but sometimes it is a lot more complex. They follow there procedures, but they also try to be fair to every student that has to come in for a review. I was invited to
sit in on the Student Advocacy & Accountability meeting where this committie is currently reviewing and modifying the LSU student code of conduct. This was soooo interesting. First, I think it was really nice that they would allow me to be apart of this...AHHHHH. I was scared. I got so nervous when they asked me, a student, for my opinion. I felt like running out of the room. When I realized that they were being genuine and wanted me to feel included I relaxed :) I was allowed to ask questions. I learned so much by attending that meeting. It is important to know that this division is always working to make sure the students are provided with the best services and polices that are appropriate for LSU. I met the Dean of Students, K.C. White.  She was so nice and spoke highly of our beloved MSU.

I have been assigned to come up with the "Study Group Initative." They want to create these groups in the traditional halls so that they have an opportunity to be successful in their academics like the Residential colleges (similar to living learning communities). I will also be working on the Time Management campaign for the month of October that is apart of the #liveGOLD campaign. I have been working on researching study groups and the best way to form them. I have also been coming up with "creative names"...got any suggestions LOL? Once I received my assignments, I was somewhat overwhelmed becasue I know that this will actually be implemented once I am gone so I want to do my best at it. I will keep you all posted on how this pans out. I went on a tour of campus and it was BEAUTIFUL. Weird, but I find myself very fascinated by the live oak trees. The limbs lay all over the ground and they create shade where you wouldn't think you would have it. I am viewing it as covering over me that will allow me to be successful while I am here. I know being too sentimental.

I hope that each of you are having a great time! I miss yall!

Hello Everyone!

As Ive told you before...IM LOVING IT HERE! My time here has been filled with so many activities.
- Meetings with LSU Residential Staff
- Student Code of Conduct Review (meeting)
- Met with LSU Dean of Students
- Practicum Assignments
- Tour of Campus

I have been filled with so much knowledge in just my short time here, it is exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Everyone has been so welcoming and willing to teach me whatever they can. Each moment I have to think about how thankful I am for the staff and this experience...I almost find myself speechless. Any of you who know me, know that this has been a much anticipated and needed experience for me. I am getting more than what I bargained for in the most positive way possible.
I started meeting with my supervisor, Maylen, and we went through my learning contract word for word. I liked that she wanted to make sure she understood exactly what I wanted out of my experience. Immediately, I knew that I would have someone who was willing to invest in me. So I know it is safe to say that I felt comfortable. On my first day, I had a week of meeting scheduled. I have been assigned a mentor, Rhea. She is considered a new professional. She has been awesome! Knowing that I have someone I can call on to ask questions and teach me things will be very rewarding. She will be a great example for me as I go through my practicum and the next few months. As I think back almost everyone has asked me "What area of Student Affairs do you want to work in?" Deja: "I have no idea." I have been assured that almost every professional in our field starts there process in that way. WHEW!

  1. Wow Dejanea! Such great diversity of experience for you! I can't wait to hear how your time management programs go and your continues experiences with conduct policies. I really like hearing how they do things at LSU and thinking about how that compares to State. Good luck this week, you will do great!
