  Reflection:

Hey guys, I’m learning how to swim through orientation.  This week has been full of nerves and excitement, but I can say I’m picking up quickly.  I jumped right into orientation this Wednesday and things have been great so far.  I shadowed my wonderful classmate Brooke as she showed me the ins and outs of MSU orientation.

These are the wonderful ladies in the information center!
I had the opportunity to assist students and parents as they navigated to different orientation activities, make sure service organizations were set up at their tables for recruiting/informational sessions, and assist in the information center.  Luckily, I had wonderful people to aid me in this process because there is a lot of information to take in.

My goal was to ask Brooke as many questions as I could so I could be prepared if someone asked me for help.  I was reassured when I worked with Brooke because she was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about orientation and willing to teach me.  My goal was to ask Brooke as many questions as I could so I could be prepared if someone asked me for help.  I was reassured when I worked with Brooke because she was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about orientation and willing to teach me.

Thanks for all your help girls, I appreciate each of you!!!
At first, I was fearful that someone would ask me a question that I did not know the answer to.  Then, I quickly realized that I would never know all the answers.  Once I was confident in my ability to only do the best I can do, I was ready to accept the challenge.  I had hopes to increase my knowledge and confidence as I interacted with others and to be approachable and courteous with others.  I enjoyed meeting new people and being around different personalities of the orientation staff members.  Everyone was encouraging and a pleasure to work with.

Fun golf cart ride! Look out pedestrians, orientation workers coming through!

I look forward to helping with orientation next week and completing my practicum because I know this experience will help shape my professional development.  I will continue to stay positive, teachable, and willing to make progress and I encourage you guys to do the same!

Sincerely,

P.S.
Just keep swimming

  1. Great Blog Ashley! Loved the pictures. I am totally with you on feeling unsure about not knowing all the answers, especially when there are so many that could be asked! I think you have the right idea, just go forward and do the best you can, no one and know it all. I know your going to do a great job!

    Best!

  2. It was an absolute joy to have you shadow me on your first day. Remain confident in your abilities, because as you saw on your first day it is all about learning how to approach mini-crises. We call ourselves "Firefighters" because we are constantly putting out the "fires" that are sparked by students and parents. You are truly going to thrive in our office and I am so happy to have you on board! Hang in there and just keep swimming!

    See you tomorrow!
