Carter: Week 1 at MSU Greek Life

Activity:  Crafting an e-vite for Orientation and researching Greek Ambassador Programs at other universities.
Reflection:  I am excited to be in an area that I am completely clueless about.  I know I will learn a lot in the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life.  I feel like I have come at the perfect time because the new graduate assistant started at the same time.  Although, he is Greek, this is a new role for him.  He is very knowledgeable about Greek Life on MSU's campus, so I feel like I have great resources all around me.  Everyone in the office has been real welcoming and inviting in the office.  Friday was probably the most exciting day so far.  We had a meeting with the Orientation Leaders to give them information about the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life so they can answer questions in the next few weeks from incoming freshmen and transfer students.  I found the information session to be very informative.  One thing I like is that they really encourage all the men and women to visit all the sororities and fraternities before making any decisions.  On a different note, I had the opportunity to meet Miss MSU and help her prepare for the Miss Mississippi pageant.  I really feel like I am diversifying my knowledge base about different populations of the student body.  I can't wait to see what this next week will bring.

  1. That sounds great, Ms. Carter. I have neither been Greek nor worked in Greek Life. I can imagine that you are learning a lot. It may seem a little..."Greek" right now but I know you will be reporting many cool things throughout the semester. Miss MSU will be going to the Miss Mississippi pageant in July so I know that you will probably get to witness some last minute details. I really hope you get to experience this new position for all it is worth. Unfortunately, this group of students usually receive two reactions. They are either accepted by friends or rejected due to typical stereotypes. I know that this experience will help you understand this community, the sense of family that surrounds it and its traditions, and help you possibly become an advocate for such an elite group of students. I can't wait to hear more about your experience. Good Luck!!!

  2. Anne,

I am so glad that you decided to challenge yourself and to learn more about the field of Student Affairs. Learning about the field and how each area intersects with one another will be key to your future success. I think you will also enjoy the diversity of Greek Life. Although things may seem similar, there is so much to learn and to discover. Keep up the good work. I look forward to reading more.

    Best,
    Dr. H
