Reflection:
It was a whirlwind first week in Herbert Hall.  I love the feeling of starting something new, a mix of excitement and anxiety that is unique to breaking new ground.  When I feel overwhelmed in these situations, I like to remind myself tasks that seem impossible now will be no big deal in a few weeks.  Keeping that mindset will be critical in the coming months as I have to hit the ground running in housing.  During that last week, I have had the opportunity to meet over 20 different staff and students, joined two committees, and started training on housing’s internal database system.  The experience has been exciting, overwhelming, humbling, and fun.
Learning the ropes will be a challenge because there are so many ropes to learn.  The office dynamic is fast paced and made of a very close group of coworkers.  It is easy to feel like an outsider, like I’m in a foreign country and do not speak the language, but it also makes me excited to become a part of the group.  I’m looking forward to an exciting summer, I have  more to learn then I could have possibly imagined and I’m ready to get started.

  1. Emilie,

I love your vivid descriptions. You are right. You are headed into a ropes course in many ways. You will have to learn which ropes are secure, which ones need tightening, and which ones you will have to knot yourself. I like to see you continually challenging yourself and forcing yourself out of your comfort zone. This will be a great asset with all of your unique opportunities in Housing. I look forward to reading more.

    Best,
    Dr. H
