Dean of Students Hannah Mountford

Activities:

  • Presented Residence Director Power Point
  • Presented Parent Services Presentation
  • Finalized Resident Advisor Presentation
Experience:

This week was a lot of tying up lose ends for me. I was able to finish my work for the Dean of Students office and then watch it all come full circle with the residence director presentation. I had spend a good portion of my pracitcum helping to edit the powerpoint and make it in a way that would be engaging and informative for the new Residence Directors and I think we were able to accomplish that with graphs and applicable statistics. I was also able to watch the parent services presentation be presented that I spend a great deal of time helping to edit.

One thing that I know I talked about a little bit in class on Wednesday was the Honey Moon Phase. This is something that I feel like was so real to me in my practicum experience. I was so excited to get into the Dean of Students Office and get as much hands on experience as possible. Once I first started, there were a lot of conversations about all of the different opportunities that I could have and how me and my supervisor could work together to get the most out of my experience and that allowed me to be very excited as well. Well, eventually that excitement started to wear off and the things that made me excited initially did not work, so I had to work with my supervisor to try and modify my experience to gain a new skill set and that is when I was allowed to chair the judicial review board. I think the Honey Moon Phase is something that is very real in the work place and if someone is not aware of it, or does not proactively try and overcome it, it would be very easy to lose site of why you were initially drawn to the program or department.

  1. Hannah, I definitely feel as if I got a feel for the honey moon phase myself. But on the contrary, it was me going to JSU and being so excited that I realized I had lost that excitement here at State. It was great because it re-motivated me and made me realize why I love my position so much more. -- Alexandra

  2. Hannah, I want to share something with you and also challenge you. First, you are a leader and will prosper in the future within a leadership role. I want to challenge you to look at this situation for your future as a leader. What do you think this experience taught you to be a more effective leader of staff and future students? I have no doubt you will one day be someone's supervisor, and perhaps this situation is showing you how not do a particular job. -Lindsay
