Amber Norwood: Orientation and Events - Week 5

Activities:

  • One hour of weekly supervision
Experience:

It's honestly getting a little confusing to post with the two week delay, but anyway, practicum is over! I was very sad and happy at the same time to have reached my hourly goal. I LOVED working orientation and getting to be a part of the experience of coming onto campus for the first time as a student. However, working so much during June was exhausting. I think I definitely experienced a little bit of the "honeymoon" phase mentioned in the book.
I was super excited in the beginning to throw myself into as much of orientation as possible, by about week two that was starting to fade. Don't get me wrong, I still loved it. However, the negatives were actually starting to show instead of everything being looked at with this perfect rosy glow. I think that combating the honey moon phase is another area where balance comes in. I really struggle with that and I believe that if I had balanced myself more the honeymoon phase could have lasted throughout my whole practicum experience.
On the flip side of that, my weekly hour of supervision is going really well. It's really easy to go sit in Kylie's office and just chat. She is so open to exploring what I want to do in the future and also sharing her experiences with the program. Some of her perspective really helped me get through Research in Summer I!
Over all, I can't believe that the summer is almost over and that we are soon about to launch into another fall semester. I'm ready though!

  1. Ms. Norwood,

I have to agree that once practicum starting getting to the middle point, it was pretty tiring. Because I do not have my GA this summer, I’ve had more time to relax and take a breath. One thing that I’ve heard from those who have graduated from our program is that once the school work is over, you work your job, come home, and become bored.

My first question is do you think you your professional life will mirror this life after graduation?

My second question is whether or not you see huge differences or similarities in Orientation and Events and your current GA?

Would you consider a long term career in Orientation and Events?

    A good friend,

  2. Amber,

I really enjoyed reading about your practicum experience with the orientation office. I can most certainly relate to the honey moon phase described in our text in my practicum and new GA position as well.

I think it is really cool that you can pinpoint something that could have made the honeymoon phase burn out much faster than desired. Based on your experience, how might you take what you learned and apply it when in your desired profession? Also, how has having a supervisor that you saw as a good fit crafted your idea of what type of supervisory styles you best work with?
