Reflection
Creating a pamphlet has never been something I am amazing at. It was very interesting to me the way I was thinking and how others thought about it. I wanted it to have all the information as well as be visibly appealing. I do not think a student will pick up a pamphlet and read it if it is just words on a paper and looks plain, regardless of what the topic being discussed is. There were some who just said the information needed to go in it and that was it. So I had to find a balance between making sure the information was there and having it look somewhat attractive. I personally am very proud of what I created.
In Housing here at State we always hear about the higher up meetings in which building design is discussed. When I think about the layout of a residence hall I think about student development theories. What exactly would help create better community, etc. It was interesting to actually be in on the meeting and see the challenge of conveying that importance to non student affairs professionals. Additionally, sometimes it is the business side of things that overrule all else. Parents want nice buildings with bathrooms in the room so that is what we are going to give them, regardless if it is best for them. In the book it talks about collaborating with academic affairs. I saw the struggle and the need to understand all cultures in the meeting. I am glad that I was able to be a part of this meeting because it is something that will be evident in my student affairs professional career forever.
Hey Alex,
ReplyDeleteIt seems that you have been taking away a lot from your practicum. I have two questions for you. Do you think you are better equipped to publish promotions for your job/assistantship since being at your practicum? I know both at my practicum and assistantship, I have been tasked to either revamp or develop office promotions. Secondly, can you elaborate on your meetings with Academic Affairs or those outside of Student Affairs? I know you said you struggled, but how did you overcome what did you gain?
