Career Center: Lindsay Pinkston

Activities:

  • Met with satellite office personnel
  • Observed BAMA Bound Sibling Orientation
  • Met with Director of Career and Leadership Development Coordinator for Athletics

Experience:

This week was filled with meeting other professionals and gaining a deeper understanding of how the Career Center here at UA functions. I was able to grasp the organization of everyone's job titles and see how diverse each position is even though they are all providing career services to some capacity. I was also able to see how the Career Center is utilized in orientation for siblings. It was awesome to see those two groups come together; a really unique experience!

Insights:

This week I created my LinkedIn profile and held a meeting with Ellen Pate to discuss the site. While it is not like Twitter or Facebook, many students will use the site. Ellen stated that she is cautious about adding students on her account and then went on to explain the importance of keeping a professional relationship with the students. One vital piece of advice she gave, specifically for LinkedIn, was the site itself is used for professional networking, and that adding students would not be beneficial to the intention of the site. I enjoyed hearing her advice and perspective regarding ethics and social networking sites.

  1. Lindsay,

I am so excited that you are having a great experience at UA! I find the conversation you had with Ellan Pate about the LinkedIn website very interesting. I have little knowledge of it and its purposes. So, reading about that was very useful for me! I do wonder though what the acceptable procedures are to communicate with other professionals on that site? I know you can find and connect with professionals, but when is it appropriate to contact them? Anytime? I just do not know much about that social network, so I would much like to know more!
