Counsel, and Legal Advisor to create a plan of action throughout the summer.
The biggest impression I have with the Office of General
Counsel is that this is a very important office, and imperative for the
university overall. The first day I was
there, there were conversations about workman’s compensation, trademarks,
student organization bylaws, and students having an advocate with university
attorneys. All of these conversations
were completely different, but impacts all facets of the university, and not
just Student Affairs.
Another impression I had was the employees within the Office
of General Counsel are very knowledgeable about the law, and all of the systems
within it. It was somewhat overwhelming
to see professionals that are that knowledgeable at work. I hope to be at that level some day, but it
is overwhelming at this point. I also
realized that this is a different dynamic than I am typically used to. The
purpose of this entire office is to protect Mississippi State University at all
time. Student Affairs do that, but in a
different way. Typically the Office of
General Counsel is in litigation with students or employees, and that will be a
completely different atmosphere to experience.
Though this is difficult to articulate why this practicum experience is
beneficial at the graduate level, the topics I will be introduced to will stay
with me throughout my entire career.
Lastly, I learned that though this office is intimidating
and others might have a negative perception of the office, the professionals
are great. I have felt welcomed
throughout the entire process, as they know I have no legal background. There is a sense of community in the office,
and a work hard but play harder mentality.
I appreciate the comfort of the office, and makes me experience even
more memorable and invaluable.
