Cherry - Week 2 - Center for Student Activities

Activities:
-Met with Jackie Mullen to go over learning contract
-Mailed 300 letters to various businesses around Starkville, MS for the upcoming Shades of Starkville showcase
-Worked the Center for Student Activities (CSA), Student Association (SA), and Music Makers Productions (MMP) orientation tables
-Reviewed the CSA organization manual for 2013 prior to distribution

Reflection:
This week has been amazing! I selected the CSA for practicum knowing that it would allow me to work with various student groups and that is exactly what I've been doing. My favorite learning experience this week has been the outside contact with local businesses for Shades of Starkville, a showcase held on the first day of classes to present incoming students with the various businesses and student groups located on or around the Mississippi State University campus. I collaborated with other members of the CSA to select, prep, and invite over 300 businesses in Starkville to partake in Shades of Starkville. I learned that large organization fairs can be tedious and demanding. Through teamwork and collaboration, we were able to finish within three days.

Another avenue of learning this week was working the CSA table at orientation. In collaboration with MMP and SA, I was able to engage several incoming freshman. It is interesting to see the changing dynamics of the incoming freshman class. I was also able to work with parents, something that I experience on a daily basis in Housing and Residence Life. Finally, I was able to review the student organizational manual for final changes. This provided me with a better understanding of how student groups start and the stipulations in which they have to maintain.

  1. I think you picked a great practicum. Be able to work with so many different groups at one time will give you great experience. You are also getting experience in working with the local community as well as collaborating with others on campus.

I'm looking forward to see what other things your experience with CSA will bring you!

  2. I am so glad you are being able to do so much with this CSA. I am looking forward to what the Student Organization handbook will entail! This manual is really needed and I am glad you get to be apart of that!

    Can't work there for internship!
