Avenmarg - Week 2 - Dept. of Housing and Residence Life

Activities:
- 'Behind Closed Doors'
- RLT meetings
- Meeting with Calvin
- Shopping for RLT activities

Reflection:
This week was a little slower than last week as far as dealing directly with parents or incoming students goes. However, I did get some important insight into how purchasing and pro-card forms are done. Friday, I spent two hours shopping for various things with some of the RD's and RLT committee for various items we would need in the next few weeks. Jerry then showed me how to properly document the purchase and where to return the pro-card after its use.

I also spent a great deal of time this week researching the BCD's and discussing with the RLT committee members what they wanted to keep in or leave out for training this year. I think that this is possibly going to be the most informative aspect of my practicum duties regarding training. The BCD's really give me insight into what RD's and RA's deal with on a regular basis from alcohol abuse, fights, and roommate conflicts to parent issues, bomb threats, and mental health crises. You really have to be ready for almost anything to work in the Housing department. I'm really excited and anxious to see how training goes. It feels like this summer is zooming by, and we're all doing our darndest to stay afloat and meet all the deadlines we have. I'm really looking forward to next month, especially when some of the more hands-on experiences will be happening.

  1. I am so glad you are going to be able to implement and create BCD. As a Residence Director, this was my favorite part during training because I learned from my other co-workers and myself in practical situations! You'll have to ask the RDs about my BCD experience. I am still embarrassed.

Noelle, based upon working with you so far... I know you are getting a lot out of this experience. I am glad you have been volunteering to take part in things that are challenging as well such as Behind Closed Doors. It is a tough process to try and plan and schedule, but once it is completed you will definitely reap the benefits for it. Plus, it is going to help to have RDs especially Hannah Mountford who was sort of in your shoes last summer to help you get it all organized.
You have been an awesome addition so far this summer on the Residence Life Training Committee and I know that we are coming down to crunch time, but knowing you as well as I do... YOU ARE GOING TO ROCK IT!!!
    KEEP ON KEEPING ON GIRL!!!
